World Development Report 2010
About this blog and the report
The physical impacts of climate change—such as sea-level rise, worsening hurricanes, and droughts—threaten the livelihoods and safety of millions of people in the developing world. But no country can simply grow itself out of harm’s way, in part because growth powered by fossil fuels and land development only intensifies climate change. While developing countries struggle to reduce their vulnerability and maneuver through a changing technological and competitive landscape, their primary concern remains economic growth and poverty reduction. Balancing these competing challenges is fast becoming one of the most important—and controversial—topics of debate in the development community.
The Development in a Changing Climate blog is a forum to address these issues, and in particular, get broad-based input on the fundamental questions at the nexus of development and climate change. What does climate change mean for development? What does development mean for climate change? What does all this mean for policy? These questions will be tackled by the World Development Report 2010, an upcoming volume of a series of annual reports from the World Bank.
The WDR 2010 team is currently sponsoring the blog, with additional input from colleagues inside and outside the Bank. The discussions here are an integral part of the work of our WDR team. This blog allows a wider community of stakeholders to weigh in on key debates and inform thinking about climate change and development in the WDR and in the future work of the World Bank.
