1-to-1 Computing
Maine's 1-to-1 computing initiative is indeed quite different than other initiatives I have seen. As you have outlined here, the "as defined by the student" aspect of this particular initiative is indeed radical. I also feel that this aspect of it is what what sets this initiative apart from others, and perhaps makes it more successful.
