Mike, I was commissioned not long ago, to look at a number of OLPC programmes elsewhere in the world and sadly, none of what is reported from Peru surprises me at all. We seem to have the crazy situation where here in the UK, we have a crisis in basic literacy (and I guess things aren't all that rosy in the US either!) and yet someone like John Wood is running "Room to Read," an outstanding effort to improve literacy levels in the developing world and yet simultaneously, huge investments are still being made in educational technology in the belief that it delivers educational benefits. I can't help wondering if there is any connection between Wood's efforts and the fact that he is ex Microsoft and maybe, just maybe... he reached the same conclusion as you do in this post. I certainly did about three years ago, when I decided "digital literacy" is just "digital lunacy" for any culture that is abandoning interest in the educational value of textual reading in favour of screen reading.
