mob rule vs. wisdom of crowds
It's a long-held suspicion- provide broader opportunities for people to participate in the political system, and you get "mob rule". Those in power often look at those not in power as incapable and dangerous. Of course, the alternative is rule by vested interests. Prevalent systems of democracy use a proxy notion - you vote for a representative who may advocate for you.
Web 2 has become a great equalizer. The examples mentioned here show how Web 2 can be harnessed to improve governance through making information available. As we saw with the last U.S Presidential election, it can be leveraged for change in developed countries.
Marshall McLuhan once observed that people tend to talk about the technical details for any new media rather than what is important - the effects. Social media is transforming governance, governments and civil society in ways unconceivable in the print-radio-TV-Web 1 eras. Wikinomics on steroids.
This is clearly a subject that needs more research and can very much benefit from the wisdom of crowds.
