I like the second exercise as well. I am trying to think for whom it would be a good exercise -- such as a student. I'd expect the differences between WP and published versions to vary by the time in between (as we learn about better practices, robustness checks, etc.). It would also potentially reflect referees and editors resistance to some of the earlier findings/methods, etc. It's an interesting exercise for other reasons as well, such as how overambitious/overexcited claims unsupported by evidence get weeded out through the review process (or through comments on the WP by peers, blogs, seminars, etc.)
