-ritest- and -permute- are similar. In fact, the code is based on -permute-. Unfortunately -permute- is very restricted in terms of how it permutes the variables of interest, which limits the hypotheses you can test with it. For example if your treatment assignment was clustered, the treatment itself continuous, or the assignment procedure in any other way non-standard (e.g. repeated rerandomizations, branching treatment arms), you will soon hit the limits of what permute can do.

If you use -ritest- with nothing but the strata()-option you can just as well take -permute-.
