  • In the latest AER, a paper by Heffetz and Rabin emphasizing the importance of dealing with non-response bias [1] “By using the reported number of call attempts made to participants in the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers, we show that comparisons among easy-to-reach respondents differ from comparisons among hard-to-reach ones. Notably, easy-to-reach women are happier than easy-to-reach men, but hard-to-reach men are happier than hard-to-reach women, and conclusions of a survey could reverse with more attempted calls.” h/t Marginal Revolution.
  • Dave Giles on big data [2], with a link to a new Hal Varian paper on the topic.
  • A randomized experiment on making referee reports non-anonymous [3] – “Signed reviews were of higher quality, were more courteous and took longer to complete than unsigned reviews. Signed reviewers were significantly less likely to recommend rejection of manuscripts (18%) than unsigned reviewers (33%)” This is a paper from 2000, but had not heard of it.  h/t @dadkim [4]
  • Happy 10th birthday to J-PAL – a fun video on the life of an RA [5] h/t Aliza Markus
  • Roving Bandit summarizes a Francis Teal talk arguing that spending money on education in Africa is a total waste if your goal is job creation [6]
  • The impact of paying US teachers $20,000 more to teach in high-poverty schools [7] – strong positive results on learning and teacher retention.
  • Video tour of Stata 13’s Power and Sample Size commands [8].
