I was delighted to see that the Bank has a blog devoted to poverty in Africa...Wonder what took so long...
Then when I saw that the chief economist of the South Asia division - I guess a 'usual suspect' when it comes to Bank blogging - I was a bit disappointed. Why?
1. Well, South Asia, the region with the highest poverty in absolute terms, now no longer has a blog...
2. This illustrates the problem with knowledge sharing/management at the Bank...When one individual moves, he takes with him an entire blog! [As an aside: PSD is quite good on this front in that at least it has an institutionalized mechanism to ensure continuity...And I still think it's the best blog y'all have at the WB Group]
3. As Shanta Devrajan points out in his new blog, Dani Rodrik is quite right: the field of development blogging is already getting quite crowded and I wonder how much value added this new blog may provide...I hope I'm wrong, but wouldn't be surprised if 'Africa can end poverty' meets the same fate as 'Ending poverty in South Asia'...No offense to Mr. Devrajan...Perhaps he can emulate the best practices of PSD over at the Africa region desk...
I enjoyed your comment Kautilya...
I enjoyed your comment Kautilya, I support a non profit charity that is doing great work with children in South Africa. If you would like to see what they are doing, you will find them here. http://www.ekukhanyeni.org/

Hello
My name is Abdoul and I am working at Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders in London. I would like to get in touch as we launch a campaign of appeal to Zimbabwe.
Indeed cholera has spread all over the country now and Zimbabwe is experiencing an unprecedented outbreak. The situation is even worse for the lack of sanitation and water. There are also concerns with the start of the rainy season and the shortage of drugs.
We obviously want to spread this message as far as we can and I know that for this particular place, mainstream media isn't necessarily the place to do that and that the online communities who care about the situation is big and very active. I was basically wondering if you would like to cover this issue on your blog. You can get more information about our involvement in Zimbabwe at http://www.msf.org.uk/msf_reponds_beitbridge_20081127.news.
I apologise for contacting you out of the blue - I found you through various online networks and through your blog itself and I have only contacted you because I thought you might be genuinely interested in this topic.
Thanks for taking the time to read this far
Abdoul,
