We have been working towards financial inclusion through empowerment of low-income and poor people by undertaking extensive financial literacy programs, workshops, SMS campaigns and other tools. What we have learnt is that financial literacy does not necessarily lead to financial inclusion. Fin lit has to be complemented by fin services delivery at point of disemination. We need to integrate fin lit into all fin inclusion efforts and initiatives, and stop looking at fin lit as basically product marketing, but more importantly as a means to empower BOP customers on their journey to financial security. Fin lit should not be taught, but inculcated and absorbed into our day-to-day lives.
