Globally, unclean water and a lack of sanitation pose significant risks to the health and wellbeing of people as well as to efforts to end extreme poverty and disease in the world’s poorest countries.
The following video by Water.org illustrates the tragic nature of the water crisis and their drive for new solutions, financing models, and greater transparency.
Around 1.1 billion people globally do not have access to improved water supply sources, and around 2.5 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation. Furthermore, about 2 million people die every year due to diarrhoeal diseases, and waterborne illnesses are the second leading cause of death for children under five, killing 1,400 children every day. The most affected are those living in extreme conditions of poverty, normally semi-urban dwellers or rural inhabitants in the developing world.
Co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, Water.org is a nonprofit organization that works to transform communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America by providing access to safe water and sanitation facilities.
