Coming challenges and changes? 1. Doubling in size of the world's urban areas in the next 30 to 40 years (need for trained staff, equipment, finance) 2. Increased climate variability and probably a 4 degree C warming world while utilities are asked to do more and more (usually with less money) 3. Demographics - in many countries, an aging population, with changing demands, and fewer workers 4. More intense competition over resources: water, food, energy - as well as competition over 'pollution limits', e.g. a carbon constrained world, or trace organics, heavy metals, etc 5. Global geopolitical changes as countries wane in relative influence while cities grow - cities learning how to both compete and cooperate (hopefully better than their national governments have historically been able to do)
