Many thanks - I'm glad that you like the blog. In terms of similar data sets for the Latin America region, there's a publicly available night-lights data set which is similar to the one we use that has global coverage with a time series that dates back to 1992 (http://ngdc.noaa.gov/eog/dmsp.html). Therefore, there's nothing to stop the application of similar methods to LAC and, indeed, even globally. As for the causes of some of the patterns we see in the South Asia data, that's, of course, a very important question and one that we hope to look into further!
