Alexandre Berthaud

Financial Inclusion Expert

Alexandre Berthaud is Financial Inclusion Expert at the Universal Postal Union, the UN Agency responsible for cooperation among governments, Posts, and other postal sector stakeholders. He is in charge of a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help postal operators in developing countries extend access to financial services to the poor through the postal networks. Prior to this, Alexandre was Remittances Specialist in the Payment Systems Development Group at the World Bank, where he co-led the Secretariat of the G8 Global Remittances Working Group. In 2010, he was also part of the IFC Secretariat of the Financial Inclusion Experts Group - SME Finance Sub-Group. He worked for several years in Microfinance in Mexico, after which he founded and managed Envíos Confianza, a Remittance Service Provider leveraging microfinance institutions and savings cooperatives to deliver remittances in rural indigenous areas. Alexandre holds a BA in Political Science and an MA in Development Studies from Sciences Po Paris, and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University.
