World Bank Country Director

Hartwig Schafer is the World Bank's Country Director for Egypt, Yemen and Djibouti, based in Cairo.

Schafer, a German national, has worked for over 23 years in professional and managerial positions in the World Bank and the European Commission. Before assuming his new post, Schafer held the positions of Director of Strategy and Operations in the Sustainable Development Network (from 2008 to 2012) and Director for Operations and Strategy in the Africa Region (from 2006 to 2008). He was also the World Bank’s Country Director for Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe (from 2003 to 2006) and the Chief Administrative Officer for the Africa Region (from 1999 to 2003)

Schafer has overseen the World Bank’s engagement in the areas of climate change, sustainable infrastructure, and agriculture and food security, and has strong operational experience from all across Africa, the Caribbean, and Pacific countries.

Schafer has a doctorate in economics (PhD), a masters in Agricultural Economics (MSc), and is Dipl. Ing. in Agriculture.
