Like you stated in your article that democracys basic principles include regular, free and fair elections. In your article I would have liked to read about how regular, free and fair elections are and how this affects participation.
If citizens, especially the enlighted ones, have litle or no confidence in the electro systems, they are likely to loose interest in the whole process. As it is today, the electro systems are bent to serve some specific interests and not the wishes of the majority. That so called democracy is not practiced in most states thus its self defeating to discuss participation without democracy it self.
