Jean-Christophe Carret

Jean-Christophe Carret is the World Bank Country Director for the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Burundi, Sao Tome and Principe, based in Kinshasa. He joined the World Bank Group in 2005 as a natural resources economist in the Africa Region.

Jean-Christophe Carret’s most recent assignment was Country Manager in Laos where he deepened the policy dialogue on public finance management and green growth and helped implement a multi-sectoral approach to address chronic malnutrition in the poorest provinces.

From 2015 to 2017, Jean-Christophe Carret was the Country Manager for the Central African Republic (CAR) based in Bangui. His top priority was to support the country’s recovery efforts in the wake of an unprecedented humanitarian and political crisis that resulted in the collapse of the economy and social fabric of the nation. Under his leadership, the World Bank became the country’s main development partner committing half a billion dollars, over the next three years, to help put the Central African Republic on the road to recovery.

Prior to arriving in Bangui, Jean-Christophe Carret was a program leader in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he oversaw the implementation of infrastructure, agriculture and natural resources projects. While in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he also played a strategic role in the discussions for the Inga 3 Hydropower Development.

Before joining the World Bank Group in 2005, he worked at the Center for Industrial Economics at MINES ParisTech (formerly known as École des Mines) as a research economist specialized in environmental economics.

A French national, Jean-Christophe Carret holds a PhD in economics from MINES ParisTech.
