Human Development Sector Director
Jesko Hentschel is the human development sector director in the South Asia region. He was previously deputy director of the World Development Report 2013 on jobs. The Human Development Department in the South Asia region conducts policy dialogue and analytical work — with much focus on impact evaluations — and offers various forms of financial assistance to the eight countries in the region, in education, skill building, health, employment, safety nets, and social insurance. Hentschel has been with the Bank for 20 years, focusing on poverty reduction and human development. His analytical and research work has contributed to our understanding of existing barriers for poverty reduction and on the design of pro-poor public policies. He has lived and worked in Argentina, Madagascar, and Turkey. He has published several books and articles on qualitative and quantitative social science research methods, poverty measurement, equity, and employment.
