Shiyan Chao

Senior Health Economist in Latin America and the Caribbean Region

Shiyan Chao is Senior Health Economist in Latin America and the Caribbean Region. Prior to joining the region, she worked in the East European and Central Asia, Sub-Sahran Africa, East Asia and South Asia regions. She has been the task team leader for both analytical work and investment operations, as well as the regional AIDS coordinator. She has worked on health policy, health financing, health system development, TB and HIV/AIDS control and, more recently, non-communicable diseases through projects and policy research in more than 20 countries. She has also been teaching international health at George Washington University’s School of Public Health and more recently in Georgetown University. Shiyan has a Ph.D. in Health Economics and Economic Demography from the Johns Hopkins University. She also has a health management certification from Harvard University.

Shiyan Chao es economista senior para América Latina y el Caribe en el Banco Mundial. Antes de unirse a la región trabajó para Europa del Este y Asia Central, África Subsahariana o en el Este asiático. Ha sido gerente de proyectos tanto analíticos como de inversiones, y coordinadora regional de SIDA. En el ámbito de la salud, está especializada en políticas públicas, financiamiento, desarrollo o enfermedades no transmisibles. Fue profesora de salud internacional en la Universidad de George Washington y, más recientemente, en la Universidad de Georgetown. Shiyan tiene un doctorado en gestión de salud y economía demográfica en la universidad de Johns Hopkins. También tiene un certificado en gestión de salud de la Universidad de Harvard.
