Thomas Oommen

Thomas Oommen received his Ph. D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Tufts University, Massachusetts, USA, in 2010. He is an associate professor in the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences at Michigan Technological University. His primary research activities are in the application of machine learning, image processing, and remote sensing for pre- and post-geohazard characterization. Dr. Oommen is a Civil Engineer by profession. Dr. Oommen has professional experience in Southern Asia in the geohazard management sector. Dr. Oommen is the secretary of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Geo-Institute committee of Engineering Geology and Site Characterization, chair of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (AEG) seismic hazard committee, and member of the landslide committee. Dr. Oommen is also an editorial board member of the Journal of Environmental and Engineering Geoscience. He actively participates in the Transportation Research Board committees. Dr. Oommen has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Oommen is currently serving as the Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Principal Investigator  on  United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) sponsored projects (under the RITA/OST-R commercial remote sensing program) investigating remote sensing for hazard management along transportation corridors. Past and current research clients include the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), US DOT, and private transportation companies (Alyeska, Canadian National, and Omnitrax). Dr. Oommen has trained over 20 graduate students.
