Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist, World Bank

Jian is an Architect and Urban Planner with experience in urban resilience. He is a Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist in the East Asia and Pacific region’s Urban, Disaster Risk Management, Resilience and Land Global Practice. He provides technical expertise on disaster risk management, urban design and planning, building design and regulation, and social inclusion. Since joining the World Bank in 2017, he has worked on projects related to urban resilience, disaster preparedness, disaster risk financing, and climate adaptation. He is also a Gender focal point in his work unit, helping task teams to reduce gender gaps in their projects. His country experience includes Indonesia, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, and Tonga.

Before joining the World Bank, he worked as an Infrastructure and Urban Planning Advisor for the Government of Samoa, and in the Pacific Region division of the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). Jian also spent a decade working in the private and public sector as a registered architect and urban designer, designing a variety of buildings and city master plans in Australia, Canada, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and the United States of America. An Australian national, he holds a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, a Master’s degree in Architecture, and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.
