Mr. Milan Antonijevic is a prominent human rights defender, independent expert, and member of the Council for Monitoring the Implementation of the Recommendations of the Mechanism of the United Nations for Human Rights of the Republic of Serbia, and an independent expert member of the Council for Monitoring the Implementation of the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Strategy of Prevention and Protection against Discrimination for the period from 2014 to 2018.
Since 2010, Mr. Antonijevic has been Director of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights organization (YUCOM), founded in 1997. He holds a law degree from the Belgrade Law School and studied as a FCO Chevening scholar at Bradford University in the UK, in the Department for Peace Studies.
Mr. Antonijevic is also a candidate of Serbia for the UN Committee Against Torture.
Mr. Antonijevic possesses significant experience on human rights protection, prevention of torture, advocacy, drafting laws, and EU integration. Through his work with the National Convention for the EU, where he has chaired the Chapter 23 working group since 2015, he is advocating for the harmonization of domestic legislation and practice with EU standards and Aquis.
For nearly twenty years Mr. Antonijevic has been active in the protection of human rights - conducting trainings for civil society organizations, judges, prosecutors, and state institutions. After graduating h began providing free legal aid to victims of human rights violations before domestic and international courts and bodies, the Constitutional Court of Serbia, the European Court on Human Rights, and various UN Treaty bodies.
As an expert member of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) since its establishment by the Serbian Ombudsman in 2011, Mr. Antonijevic has participated in the work of NPM - conducting expert visits, writing reports, and providing recommendations.
Additionally, he has also coordinated a significant number of international projects targeting human rights, judiciary reform, discrimination, impunity for acts of torture and ill-treatment, and conditions in penitentiaries.
