Apolitical’s inaugural list of 100 Most Influential People Working in Digital Government celebrates people who make sure government makes full use of the opportunities offered by digital technology — while avoiding the pitfalls.
It’s the first of its kind to show the full international spread of innovative work in the field: we celebrate world-beating individuals from every continent.
Public servants from all levels of government appear alongside representatives of the private and third sectors and academia. Everyone included has exerted outsize influence on the transition to digital governments, whether through policymaking, research, advocacy or other means.
But a key segment of the list are public servants working for international organizations, among them Tiago Peixoto, the World Bank’s Senior Public Sector Specialist. Their cross-border influence and ability to set trends make international organizations well placed to drive the takeup and implementation of digitization projects across the world.
We put together the list via expert and peer nominations. We received nominations from over 130 experts in digital government from national governments, international organizations, academia and business, including the OECD, the Open Government Partnership, USAID, the Alan Turing Institute and The World Bank itself. We received over 500 nominations in total.
The research was then conducted into every nominee and a shortlist was decided based on a range of factors, including the number of nominations received, past achievements in the digital government arena, and the power and potential to effect change at a national or international level, including by virtue of their position or mandate.
In all, we want to highlight what’s working in digital government, and through the work of those named to provide both a snapshot and a road map for the future of digital policy.
