Economist, Africa Region Gender Practice, The World Bank

The World Bank’s Africa Region Gender Practice is looking for an Extended-Term Consultant (ETC) to work on Private Sector Development (PSD) and gender in Africa, namely on a set of rigorous impact evaluation studies.

The ETC will be based in Washington, DC, and will work under the direct supervision of the Africa Region Gender Practice Leader on a specific number of research studies in earnings and productivity, as well as in integrating gender in the policy dialogue. The position requires frequent travelling (30% of time) to countries where ongoing work is being developed.

The ETC will help coordinate the Gender Practice impact evaluation programs in gender and private sector development; work with government counterparts, other WB units and country and project teams in the development of impact evaluation products; provide technical support on the design and implementation of selected impact evaluations; present on work as well as provide technical workshops to government counterparts and project teams.

The ideal candidate for this position will be at least a Masters-level graduate (PhD preferred) in a relevant field (Economics, Business Administration, International Development, Statistics). Candidates should possess strong private sector (development) experience, organizational skills, experience with survey field work, and preferably experience in Africa. Relevant understanding of enterprises and gender especially in the regional context are preferred.  Ability to work independently with limited supervision is necessary. Be fluent in French and/or Portuguese is a plus.

The successful candidate will be contracted under a one-year Extended-Term Consultancy (ETC), renewable for up to one year. The position starts as soon as possible (latest August 2012) and will be based in the World Bank's headquarters in Washington DC.
