Ensuring all people can lead productive and fulfilling lives is central to our mission at the World Bank.

The mission has never been more urgent. The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent setbacks from conflicts, from climate change-related extreme shocks, as well as uncertain economic growth, have all led to a massive setback to already low levels of human capital and a surge in poverty and human suffering.

The cost of inaction in this moment is great. Human capital is the foundation of growth and prosperity. It is also the foundation of resilience of people and society to all manner of shocks and is essential for overcoming inequalities and the disastrous impacts of fragility, conflict and violence.

Our work is guided by conviction of the power of education, quality healthcare, social protection and jobs to help people around the world improve their lives and face challenges with resilience. Protecting and investing in people almost always brings high returns. This new blog, Protect and Invest in People , aims to share cutting-edge knowledge, data, analytics and experiences in human development. The pieces we share are meant to inform wider discussions, to inspire, to provoke further analyses and reflection, but most importantly, to recruit us all to action.

I invite you to follow this space and engage on these critical issues. Share the things you find interesting, intriguing, thought-provoking, insightful, hopeful or concerning. Spread the word about this blog in your networks.

I do believe the stakes are high, and together, we can make the difference.
