#AfricaCAN: Lesotho Pig Farmer Uses Social Media to Reach Customers

This page in:

Constance Senekal, a teacher by profession, initially ventured into pig farming to sustain her family.

She used to keep her livestock under an open structure where it was exposed to harsh weather. But with a grant from the Lesotho Smallholder Agriculture Development Project (SADP), Constance was able build a larger protective structure and buy more stock. Now she successfully runs Senlet Family Piggery, where she sells piglets and pork.

Under SADP, Constance also received training, from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, on how to care for her stock and market her products. One of the media she uses to reach a wide audience is Facebook. She says that social media has worked better for her than traditional media, such as radio.

Constance is one of over 55,000 smallholder farmers who applied for and were awarded public grants under the World Bank financed SADP. The SADP aims to increase competitiveness and improve market access for farmers in four of Lesotho’s 10 districts.

With the provision of an additional financing of $10 million, the project will now reach farmers in three more districts. Meet Constance and find out more about her business.
