On April 14, watch live as the World Bank announces the winners of the first-ever Apps for Development competition.
The World Bank launched its Open Data Initiative in April, 2010. This initiative made available an array of data sets, including the World Development Indicators, African Development Indicators, and Millennium Development Goals Indicators – free for all.
The Apps for Development Competition set out to bring together the best ideas from the software developer community to create innovative apps using World Bank data.
The Competition challenged participants to develop software applications that addressed one or more of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Submissions were any kind of software application, be it for the web, a personal computer, a mobile handheld device, console, SMS, or any software platform broadly available to the public. The only other requirement was that the application use one or more datasets from the World Bank Data Catalog available at data.worldbank.org.
107 apps were submitted from 36 countries across every continent; more than half came from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The apps use a wide variety of World Bank data, including information about health, the environment, education, agriculture, gender, and demographics.
