Chart: Internet Access Lags Behind Mobile Phone Use

Although digital technologies and their broader development benefits are spreading rapidly, there is an unequal distribution, and Internet access lags behind ownership of mobile phones in most regions of the world. (Note: I created the aggregated values for geographic regions in the chart above from this data published in the World Developmet Report)

While the gap between mobiles and internet remains, in general, the spread of digital technologies in low- and middle-income countries since 1990s has been remarkable, especially when compared with relatively modest advances in areas such as water and sanitation.
