Open Climate Data Meeting

This page in:

Join us at the World Bank on January 31st for a discussion about using open data to address the challenges of climate change.

Image The World Bank recently launched three related initiatives—the Open Climate Data Initiative, the updated Climate Change Knowledge Portal, and the AppsForClimate Competition—to expand the availability of open data relating to climate change. So how can these recent efforts on open data help address the challenges of climate change and development? And how can the climate change and development communities use open data to improve decision making, planning, and communications?

We need greater understanding of the available data, together with greater capacity for using it effectively. So the World Bank is inviting data experts, developers, and the climate change specialists to join us for a lunch-time discussion to learn more about open climate data, and talk about how it can be used to address the challenges of climate change. Event details are below.

We’ll start out with a brief overview of the recently launched Open Climate Data Initiative and the AppsForClimate Competition. Then we’ll do a deeper dive into the climate data itself, what’s available, and what’s possible. The data experts behind the Climate4Development site will talk about using open data and open source mapping tools to build highly effective visualizations—and how you can do the same thing.

But mostly, we want to hear from you and from your colleagues. What ideas do you have? What problems could be solved with better, more open data? What would be a "killer app" to you? We think it would be terrific if we ended up with some great conversations or even new partnerships between climate change experts who understand the big picture issues, and developers with the skills to build solutions.

For those who can't attend, we will post a complete summary with video and presentations following the event.
