I am deeply saddened at the loss of Peter Sutherland, who passed away this week.

I knew Mr. Sutherland through his critical work as the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General for Migration and Development. He was the architect of the Global Forum on Migration and Development, which now attracts over 150 countries annually to advance international cooperation on migration. His contributions to global thinking on migration is unparalleled. Widely referred to as the “father of global migration,” Peter’s tremendous drive towards creating and building initiatives to foster cooperation on protecting migrants affected by crises resulted in a durable legacy that will be important to the lives of millions of people going forward.

While leading and driving global initiatives, Peter as an exceptional statesman highlighted the importance of localization and designing robust solutions in cities and municipalities.

In this seminal year, as the global development community comes together on a new Global Compact on Migration, Peter Sutherland’s tireless efforts to build consensus around international migration will continue to inspire us all.

I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to Peter's family and his many friends around the world.
