This year’s global Development Marketplace competition focuses on “Innovations in Water, Sanitation, and Energy Services for Poor People.” 119 finalists have been selected to showcase their projects May 8-9 in Washington DC. Private businesses made up a record 20% of the final group – doubling last year’s total. These businesses propose innovative ways of improving their communities’ access to sustainable water, sanitation and energy services, with ideas ranging from marketing locally produced solar-powered lighting products, to producing and distributing low-cost water filters, to training and certifying service providers in rural areas.
