The joint World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings are getting started in Istanbul, and this year promises an especially busy schedule. How will you keep up with it all? You can follow our man on the inside: Neil Gregory, Senior Adviser to the VP of Financial and Private Sector Development. He'll be Tweeting from the Program of Seminars that precede the start of the Annual Meetings proper next Tuesday. You can follow Neil @nfgregory. We'll also be Re-Tweeting Neil's commentary @worldbankpsd.
One event to follow in particular: Getting Back to Business. This seminar will take place on October 5, 2:30-4, and features Adrian Wooldridge (of The Economist fame) as the moderator, plus the following line-up of panelists:
- Nizar Baraka, Minister of Economic and General Affairs, Morocco
- Mlaðan Dinkic, Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Serbia
- Mahmoud Mohieldin, Minister of Investment, Egypt
- Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındag, Chair, Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association, Turkey
The session will hit on a crisis-related issue that is set to get a lot more attention. Although the global economy has been sprouting some green shoots (the IMF just issued a revised and more optimistic forecast for GDP growth), the issue of unemployment looms large. What can be done to ensure that we don't see a jobless recovery in 2010? The panelists will have their work cut out for them in formulating an answer to this question.
