Abhishek Joseph is a sustainable finance expert at the World Bank Treasury. He is part of a team of financial specialists that design and implement financial solutions to sovereigns, sub sovereigns and state-owned enterprises. These financial solutions help clients: (1) access financing for development by mobilizing World Bank Group resources and private sector financing; (2) mitigate the impact of financial, natural disaster and commodity risks by facilitating access to market-based risk management tools; and (3) strengthen capacity to implement efficient risk management strategies by providing advisory services. Mr. Joseph is also part of the Sustainable Finance and ESG Advisory Program, which facilitates the development of green, blue, social, and sustainability bond markets in emerging markets through pre- and post-issuance technical assistance for issuers.
Mr. Joseph has over twelve years of experience, having specialized in developing and implementing climate strategies to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, facilitating sustainable finance business development, and developing project financing opportunities, product originations, and product monitoring for climate and sustainable finance. Before joining WB, Mr. Joseph worked for HSBC Group Plc. As a sustainable finance manager in its Global Sustainability function, he was responsible for several initiatives to operationalize and implement HSBC’s net zero ambition, its $750bn-$1trn sustainable finance and investment target and assessing climate transition plans of the most material clients.
Prior to this, he worked in HSBC's Climate Change Research team, where he authored several research materials and provided market analysis on ESG and climate change. He has also worked with the United Nations Development Programme and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Government of India.
