Dr. Alan Nicol is the Theme Leader - Governance, Gender and Poverty Reduction at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI)
A development professional with experience at the interface of global water research, policy and practice, Dr. Nicol'scareer spans over 20 years and includes knowledge of working with government and intergovernmental institutions, multilateral and bilateral agencies, research institutes, global think tanks and international NGOs. Much of his focus is on multi-level analysis of water policy and practice and the relationship between different 'waters' (domestic, agricultural, transboundary, global, etc) and other areas -- including climate change, the environment, energy, economic growth and social change. He has particular knowledge of governance, political economy and sustainable livelihoods analysis, and during his career, he has led field research, policy analysis, teaching, training and consulting activities in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, and South and South East Asia. His core expertise, however is in sub-Saharan Africa.
