Senior Economist, Poverty and Equity Global Practice, World Bank

Alejandro de la Fuente is a Senior Economist in the Poverty and Equity Global Practice of the World Bank. He currently leads the World Bank’s poverty and statistics work in Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Previously he was a Senior Economist for Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and has led collaborative engagements with other countries in Latin America, East and South Asia. 

Prior to joining the World Bank, Alejandro worked in various capacities such as technical lead or core team member for the Human Development Report Office at the United Nations Development Program, the International Strategy for Risk Reduction Secretariat of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Inter-American Development Bank, and in various positions at the Ministry of Social Development and the Office of the President in Mexico. His main areas of interest and research are risk management, impact evaluation of social policies, food and nutrition security, and human capital. He has published several articles in peer reviewed journals and is the co-author/co-editor of four books. He holds a doctorate in development studies and development economics from Oxford University.
