Alonso Sánchez is Senior Economist and Global Co-Lead of the Curriculum, Instruction, and Learning Thematic Group of the Education Global Practice at the World Bank. In his work, he has specialized in policies that support teachers and their performance, curricular and pedagogical strategies, and human capital accumulation, among others. Recently, he has focused on analyzing learning recovery and acceleration strategies to help countries address the losses that resulted from the massive disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alonso has more than 15 years of experience contributing to public policy dialogue and leading operational and research projects in education and human development in more than 20 countries, mainly in Latin America, the Caribbean, West and Central Africa and the Middle East. He is a member of the Latin American Coalition for Teaching Excellence, a network working on the strengthening of the teaching profession so that all children and youth can have excellent teachers. Alonso has various publications on various education policy topics and earned a Doctor of Education degree from Harvard University with a specialization in the economics of education.
