Anita Marangoly George was Senior Director of the World Bank Group’s Global Practice on Energy and Extractive Industries until March 2016. In this position, she provided leadership and strategic direction to the Global Practice, which ensured that Bank Group client countries received world-class service in lending, advisory and knowledge services to meet challenges in the energy and extractive industries sectors. She was responsible for implementation of the Bank Group’s Energy Sector Directions Paper, which engaged it to help countries expand access to electricity and modern household cooking solutions, as well as to support energy policy and regulatory reform, increase energy efficiency improvement, and expand renewable energy. Contributing to this effort under Ms. George’s leadership was the Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), which provides analytical and advisory services to low- and middle-income countries to increase their know-how and institutional capacity to achieve environmentally sustainable energy solutions for poverty reduction and economic growth.
The Global Practice she led also covers support to extractive industries, namely oil, gas and mining, in which the Bank Group and its trust funds, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Multi-Donor Trust Fund and the Extractive Industries Technical Advisory Facility, provide guidance to client governments to ensure sound governance in the sector, and mobilize resource revenues for poverty reduction. She was also responsible for the Bank Group’s leadership of the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership.
Before assuming this position on July 1, 2014, Ms. George was Director for Infrastructure and Natural Resources at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and before that, a Principal Investment Officer in the IFC’s Infrastructure Department. She joined the World Bank Group in 1991 as a Young Professional, working first as a financial analyst in Europe and Central Asia.
Besides her work with the Bank Group, she has headed Siemens Financial Services in India covering the telecommunications, power and transportation sectors, and has also served in management positions with the Steel Authority of India.
Ms. George holds a dual Masters’ degree in Business Administration and Economic Policy from Boston University.
