Asim Ali is a researcher and policy analyst and a member of The Fletcher Network for Sovereign Wealth and Global Capital, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He is also a member of the Sovereign Wealth Community of Practice, Collaboration for Development (C4D) platform at the World Bank Group. He has conducted research on the Fletcher-SWF Transactions Database and been involved as an academic researcher and lead consultant in a number of high-level projects.
His policy research focuses on new sources of Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) capitalization. This extends his earlier work on sovereign development and strategic funds and institutional and political economic dimensions of SWF structures and their mandates. His areas of specialization include political risk, governance and institutional foundations of sovereign wealth funds and other state-owned investment vehicles in emerging and frontier markets.
Mr. Ali’s varied private and public sector experience includes working for Manhattan-based financial firm NewOak as Director of Research, where he oversaw research of governance, risk management, and compliance issues in the area of structured finance, securitization, and banking regulations and financial markets. Mr. Ali also held appointments as an adjunct professor at The University of Western Ontario, teaching in the areas of International Relations/International Political Economy and Comparative Politics of Development and Developing Countries.
Mr. Ali holds an MA in International Commerce and Policy from the School of Public Policy at George Mason University (USA), and an MA in Political Science/International Political Economy from Waterloo University (Canada). Mr. Ali, a doctoral candidate (ABD), completed his PhD coursework in the department of political science at the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario). His doctoral research concerns the (international) political economy of SWFs.
