Christopher H. Herbst is the World Bank’s Program Leader for Human Development in the Gulf Region. He coordinates the Bank’s engagement in health, education and social protection in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. Previously he was a Senior Health Specialist in the World Bank’s Health, Nutrition, and Population Global Practice, leading the Bank’s engagement in the health sector in Saudi Arabia. Prior to that, Herbst worked in more than 25 low-, middle-, and high-income countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. His research and publications focus on health systems strengthening, noncommunicable diseases, health financing, service delivery, and health workforce issues. His academic background is in public health, political science, and economics. Herbst holds a bachelor’s degree from King’s College London, a master’s degree from the London School of Economics, and a PhD from Lancaster University, United Kingdom.
