Diego Herrera is an environmental economist in the World Bank’s Global Department for the Environment, based in Washington DC. Diego supports global and country initiatives on wealth and natural capital accounting, applies economic analysis to assess forest restoration and conservation interventions, and provides technical support across regions on valuation of natural resources and prioritization of investments in sustainable land management.
Diego’s research explores the interactions between the protection and restoration of forests, the ecosystem services they provide, and human development outcomes. Diego is trained in applied microeconomics and has experience in impact evaluation methods and cost-benefit analysis using census, survey, and remote-sensing data.
Before the World Bank, Diego worked as an economist for Environmental Defense Fund and as Postdoctoral Associate for the Gund Institute, University of Vermont. Diego has a PhD in Environmental Economics from Duke University and a BSc in Economics from Universidad de Costa Rica.
