Hnin Hnin Pyne is responsible for advancing the World Bank’s engagement in the health sector in Myanmar, namely to support the country in moving towards Universal Health Coverage. She has been leading the World Bank’s dialogue with the Government of Myanmar, development partners and civil society on improving service availability and readiness, and on strengthening health financing.
She brings to Myanmar 20 years of professional experience at the World Bank Group, having started in the Young Professionals Program. She has worked in many regions—Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, and has led policy dialogue, developed operations, managed projects and multidisciplinary teams, directed research, and implemented capacity development initiatives in the areas of health systems strengthening, disease control, sanitation/hygiene and governance. The projects include state health systems development in India, Tuberculosis control and HIV/AIDS prevention in Sri Lanka and Bhutan, and hygiene promotion in Peru, Vietnam, Tanzania and Senegal. Hnin Hnin has also coordinated and contributed to regional capacity building programs in social accountability, budget transparency, and public-private partnerships in the Middle East in the aftermath of Arab Springs. In addition to operational knowledge and technical depth, she brings a rich experience in cross-sectoral collaboration, in particular with water and sanitation, public finance, and social protection.
Hnin Hnin was born in Yangon, grew up in Bangkok, and was educated in the United States. She holds a Masters in Urban Planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a post-doctoral Bell Fellowship from Harvard School of Public Health, and a PhD in health policy and management from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
