HyeSeung Wee is a research fellow working for international cooperation at Korea’s National Health Insurance Service. The country’s national health insurance system has become well-known as an effective social security system that raises the health level of the entire population, and an increasing number of partner countries want to exchange systems with Korea. She develops and conducts cooperative projects with countries interested in Korea’s health insurance system. To this end, she is promoting the project by concluding contracts after planning specific tasks and outputs in cooperation with health sector experts from international organizations.
Prior to joining the National Health Insurance Service, she worked as a specialist at the North Korean Economy Research Department at the Korea Development Institute, conducting research on the health status of North Korean residents using activity reports from international organizations.
Focusing on the fact that North Korean defectors receive resettlement support through the medical benefit system when they enter South Korea, she conducted research on the health of North Korean defectors using national health insurance data. She believes that research on North Korean refugees using administrative data is a field that can be further expanded in the future, so she is continuing to study the effects of the health status of North Korean refugees on their settlement in Korean society.
