Is’haaq Akoon is the Senior Manager of Climate Change for the City of Ekurhuleni. An employee of the City of Ekurhuleni since 2008, Mr. Akoon leads a specialized team working to advance bold climate action across the city.
Among strategic city-wide actions for climate change mitigation and adaptation, he managed to develop the city’s first GHG inventory and ensured that the city was a key player at COP17 including the launch of a green building precinct and the first local government-owned and operated solar plant in Africa. He was the primary author of the city’s Climate Change Response Strategy and Green City Climate Action Plan. His work has included heading the City of Ekurhuleni Resilience Forum where all projects and programs are discussed to ensure impacts and effects of climate change are adhered to.
