João Pires is a Portuguese Medical Doctor (MD) with a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) and has more than 12 years of combined clinical and public health experience. He began working with the World Bank in January 2020 and provided technical support to both health systems strengthening projects as well as the COVID-19 response. He is currently part of the Core Technical Support Team for the REDISSE Program, where he provides technical support and assistance to Task Teams and clients for the preparation, implementation and evaluation of health security capacity building and epidemic preparedness and response activities and operations.
Dr. Pires has experience in the prevention and management of infectious diseases, including HIV and TB, infectious diseases epidemiology, public health emergency preparedness and response, and public health policy development and implementation. He has worked for both the World Health Organization and the US-Centers for Disease Control in Europe and across different African countries.
