Johan A. Mistiaen is Practice Manager in the World Bank’s Poverty and Equity Global Practice, working in the Western and Central Africa region. He joined the Bank in 2004 as an Economist/Statistician in the Development Data Group (DEC). He has since held various positions, his most recent assignments being Program Leader, for Equity, Finance, and Institutions respectively for the Kenya CMU based in Nairobi and for the Senegal CMU based in Dakar. Throughout his career Johan has enjoyed working closely with clients, operational teams, and development partners in Sub-Saharan Africa to drive innovation and improvements in statistical capacity, welfare measurement, and household survey programs, and to conduct applied economic policy analysis. A Belgian national, Johan studied Biology, Economics and Statistics at the Universities of York (UK) and Maryland (USA) and published in various applied economic journals and books, particularly on welfare measurement and poverty and inequality reduction policies.
