Senior Environmental Specialist, World Bank

Johannes Heister is a Senior Environmental Specialist with the World Bank’s Environment Department. Previously, he held positions with the Bank’s Climate Change Department. He also previously focused on climate change projects and phase-down of ozone-depleting substances in East Asia. He was a team leader for policy and methodology in the Bank’s Carbon Finance Unit, where he helped develop methodologies for the Kyoto Protocol flexible mechanisms and establish the Prototype Carbon Fund and other World Bank carbon funds.

Before joining the World Bank in 1997, Johannes Heister was a research associate at the Kiel Institute of World Economics. He studied law, philosophy and economics and holds a Dr. sc. pol. in Economics from Kiel University (Germany).
