Mariam Ally is a Senior Economist at the World Bank. She leads the Health Financing engagement in Tanzania, which includes work on resource mobilization, risk pooling, purchasing, efficiency and public financial management. Before joining the World Bank Mariam worked at the Ministry of Health in Tanzania as Director for Policy and Planning where she oversaw the implementation of the joint donor basket fund, government budget, health policy, prepayment schemes and health financing reforms. Mariam started a health financing unit in the Ministry of Health. While heading the unit, Mariam also spearheaded health financing reforms as stipulated in the Health Financing Strategy and movement toward Universal Health Coverage in the country. For three years, Mariam served as board member for the National Health Insurance Fund and Tanzania Social Action Fund.
Mariam holds an MSc from the University of York and MBA (Finance) from University of Dar Es Salaam. Mariam has published widely in the fields of health finance, equity, efficiency, and financial protection.
