Mercy Tembon is Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group. In her role, Ms. Tembon’s primary responsibilities are to ensure the integrity of the World Bank Group’s governance framework; facilitate effective interaction and dialogue between the Board of Governors, Boards of Executive Directors and Management of the institution; contribute to consensus building among shareholders; and provide support services to the Boards, management and other clients.
Ms. Tembon brings to this position a deep knowledge of Bank operations, a track record in promoting economic growth and social development in several countries, and a reputation for developing strong partnerships with stakeholders. She also brings a unique combination of leadership experiences working at the country and sector levels, coupled with extensive multicultural experience of living in different countries. In recognition of her leadership, Ms. Tembon received the World Bank Group Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Award in 2010, and the Excellence in Leadership Award from the World Bank Group Staff Association in 2014.
A Cameroonian national, Ms. Tembon joined the World Bank in 2000 as an Education Specialist and has since held leadership positions in different countries. She served as the Country Director for the South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia) in the Europe and Central Asia region, and Country Manager for Burundi as well as for Burkina Faso in the Africa region. In her most recent role as the World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, Ms. Tembon led the strategic dialogue and implementation of the World Bank Group's Country Partnership Framework in support of the development priorities of both countries.
