Michael Chege is currently teaching public policy and international development at the University of Nairobi, after serving for nearly a decade as the UNDP policy advisor at Kenya’s ministry of planning and the National Economic and Social Council. Prior to that, he was professor and director of the Centre for African Studies at the University of Florida at Gainesville, and chairman of the Africa Committee of the US Social Science Research Council in New York. He served as the programme officer in charge of public policy and international affairs for Eastern and Southern Africa at the Ford Foundation between 1988 and 2007.
He has taught at the University of Nairobi (1977-1988), University of Florida (1995-2005), and been a visiting scholar at Harvard University and the Graduate School of International Studies of the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is widely published in African development studies and his work has appeared in the Journal of Development Studies, Foreign Affairs, and The Journal of Modern African Studies. He has served as a consultant to The Rockefeller Foundation, USAID, UNDP, SIDA, IDRC, AfDB, and the World Bank. He received his bachelors degree in economics from the University of Nairobi, and his MA and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley.
