Mohammad Rafiqul Islam is a Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Specialist at the World Bank Group. He collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to support DRM projects in Bangladesh and Bhutan, focusing on urban and coastal resilience, hydro-meteorological systems, post-disaster recovery, resilient construction, and emergency preparedness.
Rafiq joined the World Bank in 2016 as a DRM Consultant and became a DRM Analyst in 2018. He has worked closely with government counterparts on projects like the Emergency Multi-Sector Rohingya Crisis Response Project (EMCRP), Resilient Infrastructure for Adaptation and Vulnerability Reduction (RIVER), and the Second Bhutan Development Policy Financing with Catastrophe Deferred Drawdown Option (CAT DDO). He has also co-led initiatives such as the Bangladesh Weather and Climate Services Regional Project (BWCSRP) and Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CARE) for South Asia. Before joining the World Bank, Rafiq worked in the private sector in roles including project engineer, structural safety engineer, and project coordinator. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Business Administration.
