Nguyen Thi Mai is the Senior Operations Officer for the World Bank in Vietnam, where she has worked on public health issues and regional health system since September 1998. She has been a core member of the Vietnam health team to provide support for the government counterpart and work with them to explore business opportunities. She has been managing the Vietnam HIV/AIDS Prevention and the Hospital Waste Management Support Projects.

She is the East Asia Pacific’s regional focal point on harm reduction for Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) groups by the Global Network on HIV/AIDS. Before joining the Bank, Mai was the co-founder of the social marketing on condoms and oral contraceptives program in Vietnam, supported by an U.S.-based NGO DKT International. She was a lecturer for Applied Mathematics at the Hanoi National University of Education and taught Marketing at the Economics University of Hanoi. Mai holds a MBA from the Cochin University on Science and Technology in Kerala, India, and a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the Hanoi National University of Education, Vietnam.
